Whew! What a weekend!

How was yours?

Did you find yourself making goodies for Valentines day?

The darlings are allowed to take treats to school to share with their classmates,

and we always bake up a version of these sugar cookies.

They are really easy to make,

and taste fantastic!

Soft but slightly crisp on the outside,

sweet but with a little zing...

They are drop cookies,

but this weekend we decided to roll them in colored sugar

and add conversation hearts.

Sugar Cookies

3 cups flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 3/4 cups white sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 cup butter

2 eggs

1/4 tsp salt (optional, I skip it)

Mix flour, baking powder and salt, set aside.

blend sugar and butter in mixer for 1 minute.

Add eggs, lemon juice, blend.

Gradually add flour mixture until combined.

Scoop onto (parchment paper lined) cookie sheets,

flatten slightly, bake for 15 minutes.

Usually I press a candy on top before baking :)

For our Valentine cookies,

I rolled the dough into small balls (1-2"),

rolled them in colored sugar

(food coloring mixed into white sugar),

then popped a conversation heart on top.

This makes them smooth, round and sparkly..

We made a double recipe and ended up with about 150 cookies,

which were then packed up in cellophane bags

and the kids added homemade valentines to each.

I do the cookies, they are on their own for the valentines.

Tash made hers on the computer this year :

Coco's involved lots of sparkles and glue,

and Cam's were "from Cam" written on a piece of red paper :)

By the end I am always asking myself why I do this -

but the next day when they are proudly carrying them off to school...

I remember.

Cam's party was a blast,

Sour gummy worms, crushed oreo's and colored sugar

atop tinted vanilla icing and vanilla cupcakes.

(asked Cam what color he wanted and he said "vanilla")

They were a hit!

This is the last I'll mention of Valentines, Promise!!
It's such a wonderful holiday, even when I was single,
I would round up the girls and we would hit the town,
celebrating our friendship, 'cause alot of those friendships
have outlasted marriages ;)

Today the girls and I (Cam would rather play hockey!!)

are going to make these up for friends.

So simple and so wonderful.

I have been really into Origami lately, and will be doing a post on it shortly.

Yesterday the kiddies had a day off and so we had a little Valentine Tea Party.

Natasha got a cupcake book in her stocking this year, so we tried out one of the recipes.

The cupcakes were supposed to be chocolate but this is a house full of vanilla lovers, so although the cupcakes may not look quite as cute they tasted amazing!

My bikini may not make it to Florida this year :)

Just slice off the tops after baking, use a cookie cutter to cut out hearts,

add a layer of buttercream icing mixed with homemade strawberry jam,

pop the top back on.

The girls added conversation hearts to up the sugar content, and let me just say that I am going to let them finish off the candy today and be done with it-

it's been pure madness!!

Don't All Little Girls Love Paper Dolls?

Found these adorable paper dolls here and there on the net -
can't quite remember the exact locations!

If you know, please tell me...

They are printable, and I'm getting them done on card stock for my littlest Valentine :)

I wish they still made things like this, they are full of charm.

I'm sure the little boy and girl pair will be the first to come to life,

my Coco is quite enamoured of the local scoundrels lately.

If you are a little more crafty, you can create enchanting paper dolls with a very little in supplies -

just use your imagination and whatever is kicking around your craft cupboard...

Aren't they darling?

Simple pleasures.

Keep trying to help my children learn to appreciate handmade goods over mass produced plastic junk.

Some times it's easy, sometimes the Nintendo wins out!

Better Than a Dozen Roses...

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for flowers.

I love the smell of fresh flowers through the house, especially in the winter.

Right now you can find hyacinths everywhere, they smell SO wonderful, and afterwards I put them in the cold cellar until I can plant them in the garden. We had heaps and heaps at our old house and the neighbours were always saying how wonderful our street smelled in the spring!

But when Valentines day rolls around, and the florists are charging our guys ridiculous amounts for a little bundle of blooms, I don't like to receive them.

I prefer when D. comes home with lilies on a tuesday, for no reason, other than he knows it will make me happy :)

I'm lucky to have a sweetie that gets it.
